five types of grits of diamond burs

Black: Super Coarse
Green: Coarse
Blue: Medium
Red: Fine
Yellow: Extra Fine

Coarse and super-coarse diamond grits for tooth reduction are the most popular, with fine and super-fine for polishing and smoothing a distant second.
Grinding and polishing diamonds should be used to trim and finish micro-filled composites.
Coarse grinding tools leave behind striations; fine and extra fine diamonds are suitable for finishing.

two shank types in dental clinic

(1) FG Diamond Burs
Generally 19mm in length with a 1.60mm diameter shank and fits in high speed handpieces.

(2) RA Diamond Burs
Generally 22mm in length with a 2.35mm diameter shank and fits in low speed handpieces and contra angles.

benefits of diamond burs

1. Great for cutting, especially good at cutting through porcelain, enamel and bone.
2. Enable faster and smoother cutting, and are needed when a cut requires extreme precision.
3. Diamond burs with a finer grit can create a higher polish, and are therefore more appropriate for precise work instead of removing large pieces of material.
4. High-grade stainless-steel shank, high strength, no rusty.
5. Grinding head is made of natural diamond powder. High hardness and wear resistance.

What are differences between diamond burs FG, RA and HP?

There are three main types of shank - Friction Grip Shank (FG), Latch-type Shank. (RA) and Long Straight Shank (HP).

FG (Friction Grip)
FG burs fit into the turbine of high speed handpieces. The shank diameter is 1.60 mm. The standard length is 20mm long, but longer surgical lengths are available and these are commonly needed for veterinary work.

RA/CA (Right Angle)
RA burs fit into the latch of the contra-angle on slow speed handpieces. They are generally 20mm long with a 2.35mm diameter shank.

HP (Long Straight)
HP burs fit into the nose cone of the slow speed handpieces once the prophy angle or contra angle is removed. They are used for diamond cutting discs or long 40mm burs with a 2.35mm diameter shank.

What are differences between diamond burs and carbide burs? How to choose them?

(1) Precision: Diamond burs are composed of diamond grit and mostly used for grinding.
Carbide burs, which are composed of tungsten carbide, are excellent for cutting.
Thus, diamond bur grinding is superior to carbide bur cutting. With diamond burs, there is also a reduced risk of damaging the inner pulp area of the tooth.

(2) Durability: Both diamond and carbide are exceptionally durable substances.  However, diamond burs lose cutting effectiveness more dramatically than carbide burs over time, resulting in a shorter lifespan.

(3) Usages: Both Tungsten carbide burs and diamond burs can be utilized for deburring, finishing, smoothing, and shaping. But Tungsten carbide burs are more resistant to high temperatures than other materials, allowing them to operate for longer periods.
Diamond burs are more useful for carving into stone as compared to tungsten carbide burs, so the main choice selection of material is dependent on the application.

(4) Smoothness: Carbide burs cut and chip away the tooth structure, as opposed to grinding it like diamond burs do, resulting in a far smoother finish than diamond burs.

(5) Zirconia cutting burs: Cutting and removing zirconia crowns can be rather difficult. Diamond burs are more suitable for the task than carbide burs due to their high-speed grind. The same remains good for ceramic crown fabrication.

As a result, When ultra-precision cutting is required, diamond burs are a better option than carbide burs.
