how to engrave glass?

Glass engraving is an art form that has been around for thousands of years, and it has become more and more popular ever since. Then, how to do it? Let's read on to this article.

Tools and Materials

Mask

Eye Protector

Paper

Scissors

Tape

Glass (Cup)

Electric Drill

Burs

Cloth

A Bowl of Water

Steps

Step 1. Wear Dust Mask and Eye Protector

Wear a dust mask and eye protector before you engrave since dust will fly around when you use a bur to engrave. It’s also advisable to wear long sleeves and make sure you have no flowing items of clothing on, such as scarves or baggy sleeves. Also, avoid wearing long jewelry chains or having long flowing hair that could potentially get caught up in the drill cord or rotary bur as it’s whizzing around. Don’t forget to wear eye protector at all times.

Step 2. Engrave on Glass with Burs

You can choose freehand engraving if you’d like. If you don’t want to, you can print the picture you want to engrave on the glass, cut it out with scissors, and tape it to the inside of the glass with tape. Then you can trace the design onto the glass with burs. One direction of engraving will work better than the other because of the rotation direction of the tool.

However, there are a variety of burs and many people don't know how to choose. Don't worry! We will help you!

We suggest choosing diamond burs or the following professional Diamond Burs Kit, which includes the burs you need to engrave glass.

What's more, this kit can not only engrave glass, but it can also engrave on metal, wood, bone, jade, PVC and stone.

Step 3. Wipe away the Dust with a Wet Cloth

The engraving creates a reasonable amount of glass dust, which might make it difficult to see what you’re doing. Keep a wet cloth and a bowl of water nearby, so you can wipe away the dust regularly. This will make it look like your design is disappearing, but don’t worry. Once you dry the glass, it will reappear.

Step 4. Finished!

*Tips:

When engraving, make sure that you use water. This will help lubricate the surface you’re working on, so you’ll get smoother edges. Not only that, it will also help you extend the life of your diamond burs. The diamond burs need to be kept lubricated with water to prevent them from overheating. Otherwise, overheating will cause the diamond grit to fall off, burn away (the bur will turn brown) or wear away quicker, and it can also cause the glass to crack.
